Details
RATTLESDEN CHURCH WALK TL 95 NE 3/84 The Firs - GV II House, late C14 or early C15 with rearward extension of c.1600. A 2-bay service crosswing, 2 storeys high. Timber-framed and plastered. Thatched roof. C19 small-pane casements. A C17/C18 boarded entrance door in east side. Quite complete framing exposed internally; evidence for a jettied upper floor facing north, but the entire gable was rebuilt in primary-braced studding in C17/C18. Widely-spaced original studding. A blocked 2-centred arched service room doorway and blocked diamond mullioned windows. An open truss with cambered tie-beam, and square-sectioned slightly curved archbraces. Roof inaccessible. A single-bay extension to rear has arch studbraced walling and an original attic; probably c.1600. The house was clearly once attached to an open hall standing to its right (see following item).
