Pear Tree Farmhouse

GV
II

Former farmhouse, late C14 or early C15; parlour block added late C16 to left.
1 storey and attics. 3-cell plan, with lobby entrance from late C16 onwards.
Timber-framed and plastered. Thatched roof with C19 gabled thatched dormers;
an axial chimney of red brick with rebuilt C20 shaft. Small-pane C19 and C20
casements. A 3-cell open-hall house: the 2-bay hall has at its centre a
cambered tie-beam with massive unchamfered arch-braces of 2-centred curvature.
Widely-spaced studding without visible wind-bracing; a blocked 2-centred
arched entrance doorway; tall blocked hall windows at front and rear, the
latter with square mullions retained above the transome. Coupled-rafter roof.
Both end cells have major C16/C17 alterations, but one original window is
complete with square mullions. In late C16 the hall was floored over and the
service end partition removed. The late C16 parlour block has good framing:
unmoulded, but with very closely-spaced studding and diamond-mullioned
windows; clasped-purlin roof.
