Details
WOOLPIT THE STREET (SOUTH WEST TL 9762 SIDE) 5/172 Granmor - (formerly listed as Granmore 15.11.54 Cottage) GV II House, early C16. 2 storeys. 3 windows. 2-cell plan. Timber-framed, the framing fully exposed with plaster infill panels, and the 1st floor long-wall jettied at the front. Close-studding with long arch wind braces at the corners. At the jetty, the girth beneath and the bressumer above are both moulded and embattled in two orders. Concrete plaintiled roof with two gabled casement dormers: the one to right has early C17 features; a deep moulded and dentilled tiebeam and cornice. Both dormers have C20 casements. An axial C17 chimney of narrow red bricks, the upper shaft rebuilt in C19 red brick. Various C19 windows: a small-paned sash and casements with leaded glazing above. C19 4-panelled entrance door with small fanlight. A number of features almost destroyed by later alterations can be traced: chamfered brackets beneath the jetty have had pilaster shafts with carved capitals (one remains to right). An original 4-light window in the hall has moulded mullions and arches with sunk spandrels at the head of each light; to left of the window is evidence of a 4-centred arched cross-entry doorway. To right is evidence for a prominent oriel window lighting the hall, and above it is a deep window cill which would have been moulded and supported another oriel. To left, on the site of the former service cell of the house, is a set of boarded garage doors. To right is a single-storey extension with plaintiled roof with a C19 internal end chimney of gault brick.
