Details
WOOLPIT THE STREET (NORTH EAST TL 9762 SIDE) 5/179 Weaver House and No.2 (formerly listed as ' - Premises on North East side 15.11.54 of The Street, 70 yards North West of Swan Hotel) GV II Two houses, built as one. Probably late C15: an urban house of high quality: mid C16 remodelling, when the central hall was rebuilt. 2 storeys and attics. 3-cell plan. 4 windows. Timber-framed and plastered, the framing fully exposed with plaster infill panels. Close-studding without external windbracing; the first floor entirely jettied to The Street and to Mason's Lane. Curved knees of varying thicknesses beneath the jetty, some carved integrally with the post - an unusual feature in Suffolk. Simply-moulded bressumers. At the corner of Mason's Lane is a spur corner post with a moulded and embattled capital. Plaintiled roof with 3 gabled dormers of C17/C18 with C20 casements. Axial C16 or C17 chimney of red brick. 3-light C18 casements. Two boarded and battened C20 entrance doors. A garage door occupies the ground storey walling of the left hand cell. To rear right the roof is hipped and gabletted, and there is evidence that this was a full crosswing until the main roof was rebuilt and the gable introduced in C17. Also evidence for shop windows beneath the jetty at the right-hand gable. At Weaver House are two very faded black-letter inscriptions of mid C16 type, placed above fireplaces on plasterwork, and each surrounded by a decorative frieze. One has a devotional text which alludes to the book of Philippians, the other is barely legible. (Proc. Suff. Inst. Arch: Leslie Dow, F.S.A., 1962).
