4/15 Old Thatch and attached 15.ll.54 stable range

GV II

House, C15 or early C16 with alterations of several periods, principally C17. One storey and attics. Originally an open-hall house; by C17/C18 having lobby-entrance and 4 cells. Timber-framed and plastered: some C17 textured plaster in panels survives beneath the eaves. Thatched roof: 3 C18 eyebrow dormers with wrought iron casements. An axial C16 chimney of narrow red brick. Mainly early C20 casements, ovolo-moulded in the C17 manner and leaded-glazed. Two boarded C19/C20 doors, one at lobby-entrance position. Interior: Framing fully exposed. Walls have prominent tension studbracing . An open hall has a fragmentary open truss: the tie-beam has been cut back to two stubs, but part of the archbraces remain, rather thin and of late C15/early C16 appearance. In the hall is a fine inserted ceiling of mid C16 with well-cut double-ogee moulded beams and joists. The open fireplace has a deep cambered lintel. The C17/C18 work is extensive and very plain: on-edge floor joists and primary-braced studding in extensions at either end. A lower attached C17/C18 stable range to right. It has a fire insurance sign attached to the gable.
