Church. Early C14, with late C15 alterations, probably at the expense of Sir Hugh Calveley. Coursed stone rubble to south aisle and to south tower; uncoursed stone rubble, to nave; lead roof to nave; south aisle and tower roars not visible. S-bay chancel, 6-bay nave, south aisle and south tower. 2-centre arched doorway to base of tower, having hood mould and double-leaf doors with Perpendicular wood tracery ribbing. 2-light reticulated tracery windows to south aisle and to west side of tower. 2-light stone mullion windows with cusped lights to left of nave. 2-light stone mullion window with Perpendicular heads to lights to right of chancel. 2-light reticulated tracery window to east end of south aisle. 5-light perpendicular tracery window to east end of chancel. North side of nave: 2-centre arched doorway to left of centre with hood mould having carved end stops. 2-light reticulated tracery windows to nave. North side of chancel: 3-light intersecting tracery window to right. 2-light window of unusual reticulated tracery to left. West end: round-arched doorway with hood mould and carved end stops and central boss, having ribbed double-leaf doors. 3.-light stone mullion window above with Perpendicular heads and hood mould, Top stage of tower has 2-light reticulated tracery louvred openings to each side. Battlemented parapet to tower. Interior: chancel arch-braced collar-truss roof with moulded ribs, mid-collar purlin and carved bosses. Recess to right of east window with stone tracery to vault. Cl9 piscina and 2-seat sedillia. 2-centre segmental arch to aisle with hood mould, having carved faces to end stops. C19 choir stalls, altar rail and tile floor, Nave: arch-braced collar-truss roof with moulded ribs, mid collar purlin, and carved bosses. C19 octagonal stone font with quatrefoil panels to each side of bowl. Lean-to roof to south aisle, part now vestry. C14 intaglio glass to east window. 2-centred arches to nave and tower: Majority of pews are C14 in part. History: Sir Hugh Calveley owned the manor of Steventon from c,l361-1394 and it is possible that he paid for the re-furbishment of the Church from the profits of his military campaigns: (Buildings of England: Berkshire: p227-8, 1975; Steventon Church and Sir Hugh Calveley by J. Fletcher in Transactions of the Newbury District Field Club". Vol 12, No.1, pp74-85, 1970).
