BUCKLAND SUMMERSIDE ROAD SU3497 (North side) 8/79 Somerset Cottage and attached railings, and the Old Chapel
GV II
House. Mid C16; left section converted into Baptist Chapel c.1784. Coursed limestone rubble, right gable wall rendered; stone slate roof; C20 brick stacks and stone stack to left. 3-unit through passage plan. Chapel in late C18 Gothick style. 2 storeys; 4-window range. Chapel has central gabled porch with pointed arch and impost blocks to C20 door and moulded kneelers to coping, flanked by 2 two-light leaded windows with Y-tracery and set in semi-circular arches of brick to left and stone to right. To centre of elevation is a timber lintel over a plank door with mid C16 moulded wood architrave and four-centred arch. Summerside has a central mid C20 gabled porch flanked by timber lintels over C18 three-light leaded casements; two late C19 gabled roof dormers. Gabled roof; remodelled ridge and right gable end stacks; C16 external gable end stack to left. C18 three-light leaded casement to right gable wall. Early C19 gabled single-storey extension to rear of Somerset Cottage; C18 gabled 2-storey extension to rear left of Old Chapel Cottage. Interior: Somerset Cottage remodelled in early C19 with panelled shutters, 6-panelled doors and fireplaces; 4-bay collar truss roof and straight flight stairs with winders. C17 panelled door in attic and ground floor retains open fireplace with chamfered bressumer to left and chamfered and stopped beams to the right. Interior of The Old Chapel not inspected but likely to be of interest. Late C18 wrought-iron railings on low rubble wall to front of Somerset Cottage.
