MENDHAM -- TM 28 SE 2/58 Oakhill Farmhouse - -- II

Farmhouse, possibly once a manor house. C15 main range with C16 cross-wing to left; mid C20 additions to right. Timber framed, modern render to front, colourwashed brick casing to remainder. Plaintiled roof. 2 storeys. Various casement windows of C19 and C20. The first floor of the cross-wing is jettied at the front gable end, with a C20 lean-to attached to the ground floor. There is a good early C17 plank entrance door with panelled outer face and the original moulded doorframe. Over the doorway a simple lean-to hood. Internal and gable end stacks to the main range, both shafts rebuilt. The main range comprises part of a former open hall with a queen-post roof. Both tie beams have long arched braces meeting at the centre. The tie beam of the open truss is steeply cambered, and the front wall post supporting it has buttress shafts. Queen posts of cross-quadrate section; arched-braced cambered collars. A small portion of the moulded and crenellated dais beam survives. Inserted ceiling with heavy bridging beam and chamfered joists. Moated site.
