Details

MENDHAM THE STREET TM 28 SE 2/69 High Hall Cottage - GV II

Cottage. Early C15. Timber framed and plastered with a thatched roof. 1 1/2- storeys. Old casement windows, with one gabled dormer at the front. Boarded entrance door. C19 external stack on left gable end. The building comprises a former open hall together with the adjacent service end. Much of the original structure is visible internally. The paired doorways to the service end are intact and have simple 2-centred arches; in the front wall part of the original entrance doorway is also visible. There is a queen post roof, the queen posts in the open truss being of cruciform section with broach stops. The service end has been altered and the floor replaced at a later date. Against the upper end of the hall is an inserted stack with a large open fireplace on the ground floor; the solar end beyond has been rebuilt and now forms Melrose (q.v.).
