4/226 Post Office and Stores -

GV II

Post office, shop and dwelling. Mid or possibly early C16. Originally of 2- cell cross-entry plan, a further cell added c.1700. One storey and attics. Timber-framed and plastered. Pantiled roof, formerly thatched. C19 raking dormers with casements. Various C19 windows; the shop entrance at the gable towards The Street has a C20 half-glazed panelled door. Good framing for a small C16 house; studwork with tension-stud bracing. The half-hip at the left hand end remains within the left hand gable, and beneath it is a blocked diamond-mullioned window. Roof probably of coupled-rafter type. A rear cross-entry doorway has a damaged 4-centred arched head. Heavy unchamfered floor joists. The chimney backs onto the cross-entry; the removal of the service end partition and the provision of a fireplace is probably an alteration of c.1700, when this end became a parlour. At the right-hand end a further cell was added at the same time.
