II Experimental smallholder's dwelling, 1919-20 by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research for the Board of Agriculture and Fisheries, supervising architect, W.R. Jaggard. Chalk concrete blockwork on brick and flint sills, plain tiled roof. Two storeys, L-plan with single storey wing to rear, the roof swept down over entrance at front. C20 door. Timber paned windows with brick sills and tiled hood under soldier course. Two brick stacks. Wide open-raftered eaves. Walls are constructed of pre-formed dense chalk concrete blocks, 9in x 12in x 18in, of 12 parts crushed chalk to 1 of cement moulded in a 'Dri-crete' machine. Limewashed finish. Suspended ground floor. One of the second group of experimental houses built to achieve economies using local materials and new methods.
