Details
WICKHAM SKEITH THWAITE ROAD TM 06 NE 2/153 Hall Farmhouse -
-- II Farmhouse. C16; possibly earlier work at service end. Main range with parlour cross-wing to right. Timber framed and rendered, pantiled roof. 3 cells. 2 storeys. Casement windows, mostly of late C19. To right of main range, at junction with wing, is a lobby entrance: late C19 4-panel door and plain overlight. Stack has axial red brick shaft. Small C19 stack on left gable end. One-storey lean-to at rear with flint rubble walls and pantiled roof. Interior. Frame concealed except at service end where walls have been raised c.1.5m; widely-spaced studs below old wallplate. Hall and parlour ceilings have chamfered main beams, the joists concealed. Massive lintol over blocked hall fireplace. Newel stair behind stack. Cross-wing has 3-bay queen-post roof, some of the braces missing. The tie beams which supported the queen-posts were removed c.1600 when an ovolo-moulded cross-beamed ceiling was inserted, and the queen-posts now bear on sleepers resting on the attic floor joists. Roof over main range appears to be a later reconstruction.
