Details
CHIPPING NORTON CHURCH STREET SP 3027-3127 (south side) 3/8 - No 6 GV II House. Possibly early C16 as it is traditionally known as the earliest house in Chipping Norton, but more likely to be C17 in origin and displaying the C16 fenestration of the old Grammar School which may have been reused for No 6 when the school was demolished. Coursed and square rubble stone with stone dressings and a gabled machine tiled roof. L-shaped plan of 2 storeys. The churchyard facade comprises 2 bays and a gabled end. The first 2 bays have one light Tudor arched windows to the upper floor set within moulded surrounds. These windows are iden- tical to those on the Guildhall. The lower floor has a similar window and a larger opening with 6-pane casements. The gable end has 2 C19 mullioned windows with dripstones and a C19 plank and batten door. Similar Tudor headed blocked openings appear on the N end and there are further examples on the E front. Many of these have been renewed and it is therefore impossible to tell if they are in fact genuine C16 survivals.
