Details

SU 16 NW WEST OVERTON EAST KENNET 9/130 Orchard Farmhouse 27.2.58 II Farmhouse gable end to road. C16, C17 and C18. Sarsen, with brick facade and extensions and brick gable. Thatched roof. Originally single storey, now part single-storey and attic, part 2 storeys. 3½ bays with central kitchen wing to rear. Central living hall with inserted stack with cross passage to rear, inner room in left bay with dog-leg stair, and below cross passage a dairy, possibly originally a byre. Door to cross passage within C20 open trellis porch. Square bay to inner parlour, and paned casement windows. Left end heightened to 2 storeys probably in C18. Interior has spine beams in hall with ogee and bar stops, supported on carved timber corbel in framed screen to upper end. Early-mid C16 fire hood. Stair in parlour C18. Smoke blackening in roof. Deeds relate to an estate of 1543-4. (Wilbr B2368)
