WINSTON FEN STREET TM 16 SE 1/141 Malthouse Farmhouse

- II

Former farmhouse, c.1550-70. 3-cell plan with both lobby and cross-passage entrances. 2 storeys and attics. Timber framed and plastered. Plaintiled roof with axial C16/C17 chimney of red brick. Mainly mid C20 casements; some ovolo-moulded mullioned windows of early C17. Late C18 or early C19 6- panelled entrance door, the lower panels fielded, the upper pair glazed. The hall has good roll-moulded ceiling joists and double-ogee moulded beams, a lintelled open fireplace and part of the plank-and-muntin cross-passage screen. In the parlour a similar ceiling has only the moulded bridging beam exposed. Full height newel staircase. Arch windbraced close studding. A chamber has full early C17 wainscotting and matching moulded plaster cornices. The service cell was remodelled and extended by one bay to right in C18. The butt purlin roof and attic floor structure are C17 alterations.
