Hill House
II
Former farmhouse. Late C16 in 2 stages. 2 storeys. 3-cell cross-passage
entrance plan. Timber-framed and pebble-dashed. Plaintiled roof with C16/C17
axial chimney of red brick. Mainly C20 casements of 3 lights, those at ground
storey with transomes; three chamber windows have deep projecting cills
(masked by pebble-dash) which may be the remaining part of early oriel
windows. 4-panelled C19/C20 entrance door at cross-entry. Good plain timber
framing mainly concealed: arch wind-braced close studding, and in the main
range a wind-braced clasped-purlin roof. Blocked open fireplace in the hall
has a wide and deep lintel. The higher parlour block is slightly later;
original newel staircase in two flights. An original attic with 2 tier wind-
braced side purlin roof; heavy reduced principal rafters, the upper tier of
purlins clasped and the lower butted.
