Inn Sign spanning the highway, immediately east of the Magpie Inn

Inn sign of C17/C18 origin, but largely or wholly renewed in C20. On either
side of the road are square posts about 6m high, supporting a timber beam
across the road with a diagonal brace at each corner. A painted metal figure
of a magpie surmounts the beam, surrounded by wrought iron scrollwork; beneath
it is a hanging sign with the Brewery name. Traditionally believed to have
been used as a gibbet for hanging highwaymen. N.M.R. Included for group
value.
