STANFORD-IN-THE-VALE UPPER GREEN SU 3493 (east side) 9/255 Stanford House and attached 10.11.52 forecourt railings
GV II
House. c.1760. Flemish bond brick with flared headers, limestone ashlar dressings, stone slate roof; brick stacks. 2-unit central staircase plan, 3 storeys; 3 bay, centre pedimented and brought forward. Pedimented Tuscan porch; 3-panelled double- leaf doors with fanlight set in moulded semi-circular arch with moulded impost. Square bay windows, with chamfered stone-mullioned windows, were added by George Fowles in 1870; other windows have flat gauged brick arches over sashes. Fire insurance plaque in centre of elevation; flat stone band beneath parapet; tympanum of central projecting pediment has blind gauged brick lunette. Hipped roof; end stacks. 2-bay side walls have blind windows to right and 3 sashes and basement win- dows to left; parapet is returned to side walls and ramped up to the end stacks which are flush with the wall face. Some sashes to rear right as to front; rear door, directly opposite front door, is 6-panelled with fanlight set in semi-circular gauged brick arch. Interior: 6-panelled doors and shutters. Minton tile floor of c.1870 in hall, which has straight-flight stairs and column-on-vase balusters on closed string. Room to left has moulded cornice, room to right has panelled dado and Ionic modil- lioned cornice. First and attic floors not inspected but likely to be of interest. Subsidiary features: Contemporary kitchen wing to rear left of coursed limestone rubble to left and Flemish bond brick with flared headers to right and rear; Welsh slate roof; brick stacks. One storey and attic; 3-window range. To left side are stone lintels over one 6-panelled door and one blocked door, and three sashes; 4 pedi- mented dormers have moulded cornices and 2-light leaded casements. To right side are gauged brick arches over two early C18 sashes with original thick glazing bars, one mid C19 sash and one 2-light casement; 2 pedimented dormers on left side. Mansard roof; large ridge stack and gable end stack. Interior: Straight flight stairs with winders and columns-on-vase balusters on closed string; fireplace in centre has sur- round of c.1870. Attached to rear of kitchen wing is mid C18 brewhouse and washhouse in similar materials and retaining original coppers etc. Forecourt walls and railings attached to front of Stanford House have mid C18 walls in Flemish bond brick with flared headers; railings and gate of c.1870 to front interrupted by square piers with moulded cornices.
