School house. Dated 1766-7 the right bay possibly slightly later.
Hammer dressed stone. Quoins. Stone slate roof with gable copings
on cut kneelers and central stone stack. Two storeys. Round arched
doorway to left with fanlight. Single light over. To right, 2 bays,
Venetian windows to ground, 3-light windows to 1st floor. A quoined,
straight joint between the bays suggest different builds. A round
arched plaque to the left states that the school was for the education
of the poor in Thurstonland built 1766-7 by money from the last will
of Mrs Ann Ludlam of Blackhouse, Thurstonland and later, Pontefract,
and that the adjoining dwelling (the school house) was built at the
same time by voluntary contribution. Altered gabled wing to rear of
house.
