Details
TYNEMOUTH FRONT STREET (south side) NZ 3669 SE and NZ 3769 SW Tynemouth 9/66 and 10/66 Nos. 57, 58 and 59. G.V. II 3 houses and one shop. Mid C18/early C19. English bond brick with ashlar dressings; wood shop front; Welsh slate roof. Basement,2 storeys and attic; 3 wide bays. Round brick passage arch at left. Shop inserted in no. 57. 6-panelled doors with overlights and bracketed elliptical hoods at right of houses. Sash windows above shop and at left of nos. 58 and 59, renewed glazing bars to No. 58 and late C19 glazing bars elsewhere, with wedge stone lintels and projecting stone sills. 3 case- ments in barge-boarded dormers in steeply-pitched roof with low gable parapet at right; massive central and taller right banded brick chimneys. Interiors of nos. 57 and 58 show staircase with ramped handrail; shutters to no. 58. Interior of no. 59 not inspected. Historical note: Harriet Martineau, political writer and economist, lived here 1840-45 while convalescing, and was visited by literary figures of the time including Thomas Carlyle and Charlotte Bronte.
