4/278 Banqueting house at Old Wardour Castle

GV II

Banqueting house, now exhibition space. Late C18 probably by Capability Brown. Limestone ashlar, hipped Welsh slate roof. Octagonal with two long sides. Gothick pavilion against south-west wall of Old Wardour Castle bailey. Two-storey, 3-window south-west front. Central ogee-headed panel with planked door, 3-light leaded casements in taller ogee-headed panels either side, moulded string course to first floor; ogee-headed 12-pane sash either side of blind ogee-headed panel, hexagonal pilasters to sides carried up to moulded string course and battlemented parapet. Three-sided right return has ogee-headed planked door and large Tudor-arched opening with C20 casements, first floor has 12-pane ogee-headed sash to each face. Three-sided left return has two blind ogee panels to ground floor, three ogee-headed sashes to first floor. North-east side faces into bailey with entrance at first floor level; central double half-glazed doors in ogee-headed moulded architrave, blind ogee panel to right and 6-panelled door in ogee-headed case to left. Interior has original marble fireplace against south-west wall, window shutters. Part of landscaping for Arundells in late C18, when Old Castle bailey used as pleasure gardens for Wardour Castle (q.v.) to the north-west. Capability Brown worked for the Arundells from 1773. (D.
