Details
1. 5410 HIGHWORTH CRICKLADE ROAD (north side) Covered and vaulted passages and 4 underground chambers west of Westrop House SU 1992 SE 18/256
II
2. Circa 1818. Wilt for William Crowdy Lord of the Manor. Stone passages starting in yard to west of No 24 and in garden of Westrop House. Painted brick barrel vault. From the garden of Westrop House an ice house and garden chamber (formerly plastered) are reached by curved rock lined passages approached by a double entrance in a trellis work. Entrances with sponge stone. From back yard of No 24 a vaulted passage leads in serpentine manner to junction where one branch continues to former stable yard and another by further curved approach down to a (possibly) secondary ice house. Third branch blocked. Vents in vault. A further chamber - presumably a coal and fuel shed - is entered from backyard of No 24 close to tunnel entrance. Plain vaulted chamber with coal shute/vent. Such secretive haunts were no doubt innocent places of amusement to Squire Crowdy they have since been invested with a wealth of spiritual significance.
