3/114 Cordwainers (formerly 26.4.68. listed under Caring Lane) GV II*

House. C15. Timber-framed with plaster infilling.and plain tile roof. Wealden with hall of 2 roughly equal bays, right end bay subdivided to indicate cross passage. 2 storeys on stone plinth with undercroft to left end. Right and left end bays jettied, with jetties returned on plain dragon posts. Whole of front elevation, left gable end and rear wall of left end bay close studded. Right gable end and rear of hall broadly-spaced studding with tension braces. Chamfered arch-braces to moulded flying wall-plate and solid bracket beneath central tie. Hipped roof, with gablet to right. Projecting ragstone stack to left end with chamfered plinth and red brick flue. Red brick stack in front slope of roof towards right end of hall. Irregular fenestra- tion of 4 leaded casements with original cills. Small rectangular stone window with chamfered architrave and iron grille towards left end of undercroft. Ribbed door in chamfered architrave with replaced four-centred arched head and hollow spandrels up 4 steps at right end of hall. Ribbed door to undercroft with two-centred arched chamfered stone architrave, down 5 steps at right end of left bay of hall. Lean-to behind right end bay. Interior: 2 four-centred arched service doors with moulded architraves, and plain rear stair door. Central truss with chamfered brace. Moulded inner cill to rear hall window. Stone base to stack backing onto cross -passage. Interior only partly inspected.
