TL 51 NW HATFIELD BROAD OAK WOOD ROW
3/129 The Forest 14/12/83 GV II
Cottage. C15 and earlier. Timber framed and plastered with thatched roof, gabled to north and half hipped on south. Of one storey with attics and eyebrow dormer on west side. Off centre small ridge line stack and small stack against south flank. Windows are C20 metal casements with small panes and front door is in baffle entry position in front of stack. Small former open hall house with wide spaced studs, jowled posts and markedly curved external wall braces at both ends. Remnants of soot blackened crown post (or purlin rafter) roof and original diamond mullioned windows. North east end tie beam has 2 pairs of very large notch lapped mortices from earlier use. Main posts also reused showing passing brace sockets. Inserted inglenook fireplace and wooden block inscribed 1640.
