3/82 Oaklands Park - - II*

Country mansion, now Special School for Camphill Village Trust. C.1830. Coursed and bolstered sandstone to ground floor and ashlar above, yellow limestone dressings to openings, classical parapet cornice, Welsh slate hip- ped roof. Large free standing building, main block facing north-east, smaller scale wing attached and set back, right, and on garden side return wing similar to main block but simplified cornice. Single storey porch at entrance, and bold projecting bow through two storeys, left, facing south- east.

Entrance front two storeys, 7-windowed, ground floor 6 large sashes with glazing bars under voussoired heads, first floor 6 sashes with bars in moulded architraves and alternate triangular or segmental pediments, plus central tripartite sash with Ionic half columns and responds and pedimented centre.

Central deep projecting porch arched opening in Vanbrughian modelling two large 3-panel fielded doors and fanlight with moulded arched head. River front (south-east) similar, including large bow with 3 sashes each floor, flanked by single windows. Fine dentil cornice, and plain mid-height string course.

Very good contemporary interiors include large imperial staircase rising to open well with surrounding walkway, stone treads, cast iron balustrade, maho- gany handrail; large rectangular lantern with delicately printed soffit. Many good 6-panel fielded doors, Ionic pedimented fire surround. Main room left of entrance, painted shutters, original wallpapers, cornice, etc. Bow fronted room with central rosette to ceiling, three large shuttered windows, broad frieze and flat cornice. Built for Crawshay family, colliery owners.
