SO 61 SE NEWNHAM UNLAWATER LANE (east side) 1/81 Unlawater House 10.1.55 (formerly listed as Unlawater Hotel Under High Street)
- II Large detached dwelling in own grounds, now eight flats. Early and late C18. Smooth rendered river frontage, painted brick elsewhere, Welsh slate hipped roof to river block and slate to remainder, but one south facing slope in concrete plain tile. U-shaped property, oldest section facing south into Lower High Street. Principal front (to river), two storeys with parapet pierced with bulls-eye plain openings, two large bows each with three windows to each floor; plus central window over door; all these windows cross mullion and transome with rectangular leaded panes. Pair of new panelled doors in fluted ionic pilaster doorcase with pediment and decorated frieze. Return bock (south), three and a half storeys, irregular fenestration, mostly new or replacement, includes canted bay at ground floor, various casements with transomes and one sash first floor, four C19 dormers. Six-panel door, centred. Entrance hall (south wing) with fluted ionic pillar screen, painted early C18 panelling, dentil frieze, and several round or elliptical openings off. Remnant of C17 fireplace, left, and some recent modifications to take new doors. Very fine early C19 stair in oak off left from hall, through two storeys tightly around well; three balusters to each tread, alternatively spiral and plain, but all tapered, swept and wreathed handrail, panelled dado, arched stair window (north facing) with heavy ovolo bars; good modil- lion cornice to top landing. Remnants of quarter column hall decoration in East (main) wing.
