6/133 Cowhouse at Hartsbarn Farm

GV II

Cowhouse; early C18; random rubble sandstone, corrugated-iron roof. 4-bay building, lofted throughout. Main facade wide door to left of centre, an alteration: beyond a ventilation slit, with another above: at right-hand end a square-headed window: square pitching-hole over door. Ends of floor beams visible externally. Right-hand gable central original doorway to ground floor, ventilation slit and small, shuttered opening to loft, with owl- hole in apex of parapet gable. Parapet gable at right-hand end. Internally cross wall on ground floor appears to be inserted, probably by early C19. One truss renewed south roof, original ones collar trusses, with principal rafters tenoned into tops of cranked braces rising from floor beams, to which they are braced back: an interesting and unusual solution to access through a loft with low eaves.
