6/141 Laggers Barn and yard walls

II

Field barn with attached sheds for yard cattle: C18 barn and mid C19 sheds; random rubble red sandstone, larger quoins, slate roof: one shed has corrugated iron roof. 7-bay barn, with 5-bay shed at right-angles at each end, enclosing yard. Yard elevation of barn, central pair of boarded doors to threshing floor rising to eaves: to left 2 pairs of irregularly spaced slit air vents, to right 2 near eaves, below 2 small, square openings with timber lintels, with a further vent below nearer door, on right a boarded door in timber frame. End of lean-to to gable of barn visible. Roof has parapet gable on right, but copings missing; similar gable on left removed late C20 when large vehicular access made in wall below. Internally collar and tie-beam truss, tapered principal rafters, 2 pairs of purlins with square ridge. Low walls either side of threshing floor have been removed. Rear door to threshing floor lower and narrower, cambered head, timber frame. Sheds open fronted with chamfered timber posts: underside of wall-plates chamfered. In shed on left 1 bay built up in brick as loose box, 1 post renewed; trusses tie beam with nailed plank 'king post'. 3 posts replaced in shed on right: tie beam trusses. This shed is set back beyond the barn, against end wall of a lean-to to the gable, probably of earlier date. Beyond the sheds the yard completed by walls enclosing a trapezium, with gates each side. At the end a stone water tank for cattle to drink, making this a very complete group. Barn prominent in landscape from across valley.
