GENERAL
Pair of Statues in Lydney Park and c300m north of Lydney Park (formerly listed Statues at Roman Camp)
II
Pair of pillar busts in the antique manner. Date uncertain, formerly thought
to be Roman, but possibly C16 or C17. Sandstone monoliths. The statues,
set to either side of the entrance to the gardens open to the public, are of
a male and female, possible the Empress Faustina and the God Pan; each is
a boldly sculptured head, now with noses broken off, on a downward tapering
square shaft with pecked surface and drafted edges, and flared moulded base.
C2m high and maximum 400mm square, located either side of entrance gates within
park land. The Lydney Park estate has elements of a Roman/British settlement
within the grounds, and these two statues were formerly more closely associated
with the Baths and Temple site to the south of their present location.
