Details
ST BRIAVELS THE SQUARE SO 50 SE (west side) 6/181 The Lodge with boundary wall and gate piers facing High Street - II Detached dwelling, now apartments. Late C18 and C19. Mainly rendered, but to street is painted squared and coursed sandstone, Welsh slate hipped roofs. A simple hipped block with stair extension left, to which has been added in the early C19 a parallel range, to right, and some extensions at back. To road is 3 storeys, 1-windowed, C20 casement over 2-storey canted bay with C19 4-pane sashes and a blocked arched doorway to left; to right of this a 2 storey addition with 2 replace- ment 12-pane sashes to each floor; to left of 3 storey block a good sandstone ashlar boundary wall c 2.5 metres high but swept up to c 3 metres at junction with front, and a pair of very slender sandstone gate piers to pyramidal capping, each in one piece of stone, late C20 gates. The return facade, to the north, has two 16-pane early C19 sashes over a large 3-light replacement 10:12:10 sash, and low left a stone arched opening to a cellar. Set back, right a 16-pane C19 sash over a C19 panelled door with Gothick tracery in upper glazed lights under an umbrella hood on trellis supports and a single storey extension, right. Interior not inspected, but the premises much modified in conversion to separate apartments. The property, although much modified, holds a key position in The Square and immediately south of The Castle (qv).
