CHESTNUT HILL 1. 5227 (south-west side) Stokes Croft (formerly listed under Cossack Square) ST 8499 6/31 30.5.51 II* GV
2. Circa 1700, perhaps incorporating portions of an earlier house. A good example of a gabled Cotswold house. Built of rubble stone with Cotswold stone roof. Three attic gables with small oval windows. Three storeys, 5 windows, thick glazing bar sashes in moulded stone architraves with keystones, stone cills, block corners and continuous dripmoulds. Doorway with moulded stone architrave and fine shell hood on brackets, studded door with glazed panel. Fretted lead gutter head. Original decorated lead rainwater heads. L-plan extension with two 2-light mullion windows with common label. Two+one gables to rear, the middle one-with an original mullion window. Basement doorway below. The interior has a good original staircase with twisted balusters on straight string, panel newels with ball finials, panelled dado. Hall fireplace with bolection surround. Some panelling.
