St. Mary Cottages

II

Row of ten cottages. 1886-88 by George Devey for Everard Alexander Hambro, supervised and
completed by James Williams. Brick in rat-trap bond, with roughcast first floor, tilehanging to
sides and rear. Tiled roofs. Two storeys, each cottage is one bay wide and set in pairs, with
paired doors and rear wings, the end cottages are set forward. The first floor is jettied over
canted ground-floor bay. Large stacks on the cross-walls and at ends. The street facade is a
symmetrical composition. All the first-floor windows are timber casements with leaded panes,
of three lights on tiny wooden brackets, those to the end cottages with pediments. Four-light
canted windows to ground floor. Panelled doors with two leaded lights, some replaced and that
to No.12 moved. Rear windows also leaded casements, some under arched brick heads, some
renewed.
Included as an unusual example of George Devey adhering to a formal composition. Source.
