Details

1. KENT ROAD, ST MARY CRAY 4407 Nos 4, 6, 8 and 8A TQ 46 NE 9/300 II

2. Later C16/earlier C17. Two separate but adjoining timber framed structures with later alterations and extensions.

Nos 4/6 was formerly a 2-storey, 2-bay lobby-entry house with an attic in the roof. The lower part of the front wall appears to have been rebuilt in the C18 and the gable dormer at the front of No 6 is probably also of this date. There are two modern single-storey front extensions. Apart from these alterations the timber frame survives largely intact. The roof has side purlins clasped between collars and principal rafters, with straight wind-bracing to the purlins. The lobby-entry plan form survives inside with the staircase (in what is now No 4 - No 6 has only a ladder to the upper floors) in the characteristic position behind the chimney stack. Original fire places survive on ground and first floors in No 6.

No 8A is lower than Nos 4 and 6 and set at right angles. It is also timber-framed and appears also to be of the lobby-entry type. The roof of Nos 4 and 6 has been extended sideways to meet the ridge of No 8A's roof.
