5/10 Moat Farmhouse

II*

House, early C15 with late C16 alterations and extensions. 3-cell cross-passage entry plan; 2 storeys and attics; 4 windows. Timber-framed, rendered with framing exposed. Plaintiled roof. Axial chimney of red brick; late C16 base with recessed date panel, and 3 square diagonally placed flues rebuilt c.1970. C20 casements and oak boarded entrance door. 2-bay open hall with central open truss having arch-braced cambered tie-beam supporting octagonal crown-post with simply moulded cap and base and 4 solid arch-braces. The strutted tie beam arch-braces sit upon hewn polygonal pilasters, originally continuing down to the floor. Two arched doors into service end. Evidence for hall windows with hinged shutters. Soot-blackening throughout the hall. Storeyed service and parlour ends with lodged floors and originally half-hipped roof. First floor and attic inserted in hall c.1580, and chimney with wide hall fireplace and 2 arched-headed fireplaces in chambers; staircase/garderobe wing at rear with wide window having ovolo-moulded mullions; rear 1½ storey service wing added (eaves level raised later).
