House. C15, late C16. Timber-framed, rendered; roof hipped
peg-tiled, pantiled and bitumen, felt-tiled. L-shaped plan.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, central stack with 6 shafts, rendered. W
elevation, S-N, forward projecting block with hipped roof and
external, C19 rebuilt stack on side wall to N (earlier bricks
at base). Immediately to N, 2-storey forward projecting stair
tower with lean-to roof, large C18 2-storey lean-to on N end
wall, roof continues from hip as a 'catslide'. S projecting
block, ground floor C20 door with upper glazing, 3x2 panes.
Lower single panels, porch, simple lean-to on timber posts.
C18 window frame with C19 horned sashes with glazing bars, 3x4
panes. First floor, C18 window with sashes and glazing bars,
3x4 panes; stair tower, one C18 window frame with C19 2-light
casement window with glazing bars. Out-shut, C20 door with
upper glazing, 3x2 panes, single panel below, C20 casement
window with glazing bars, 2x2 panes. First floor, C18 window
frame with C19 horned sashes with glazing bars, 3x4 panes. S
elevation (has been principal frontage) 2 window range with
hipped roof, lean-to outshut to E. All windows have C18
moulded frames and later sashes with glazing bars, 3x4 panes.
Central C19 door of 6 panels, upper 4 now glazed with rustic
porch. 2 outshut windows, C20 casements with glazing bars, 2x3
panes. E elevation, hipped roof with principal stack, C18
lean-to to N, weatherboarded with 2-light C20 casement window
with glazing bars. Full length C19 brick lean-to with felt
tiles, C20 door with upper glazing, 2x3 panes and 3 flush
lower panels, also 3-light casement window with galzing bars,
6x3 panes. N end elevation, C18 lean-to with two C20 casement
windows with glazing bars, 2x2 panes, C19 outshut, C20 2-light
casement window with glazing bars, 4x3 panes.
INTERIOR: earliest block is C15, N-S range to E, stout
studding, widely spaced with arched exterior bracing, unjowled
storey posts and cambered tie-beams with bracket arched braces
with step stopped chamfers. Wall plates with edge halved and
bridled scarf joints. N end now cut back but evidence for
double mullioned windows on both E and W sides of first floor,
one window still intact in wall, also window sill on ground
floor. Soffit tenoned flat laid joists of this period with
trimming frame round later stack, over size probably for
original timber-framed chimney. Also high isolated lintel beam
over fireplace remains as part of the redundant framing. Later
C16 insertion of stack. 3 original plastered fireplaces remain
with 4 centred arches and chamfers stopped high up on jambs.
Contemporary timber-framed range added to W side with stack on
N end, floor joists deep sectioned with diminished haunched
tenons, some replacement of joists in original block with
lamb's tongue chamfer stops on principal binding joist. Stair
tower also contemporary, octagonal newel post and principal
bearer of landing with lamb's tongue chamfer stop. On ground
floor, door inserted diagonally between stack corner and
centre of stair tower, depressed 4-centred arch and lamb's
tongue chamfer stops to frame. In C19 alteration N-S central
corridor to front door continued at junction of the 2 earlier
builds providing the symmetrical facede of the S front. In the
corridor a principal post of the early block has 2 rising
display braces implying that a medieval hall once ran from
this 'high' end wall towards the W.
