GV II

Pair of attached houses, now shops and offices. Late C17, refenestrated C18, C19 shop fronts. Rendered timber-frame with a central brick stack and pantile roof. Single rooms front and back with central inner stairs. Each of 2 storeys and attic, No.70 single storey and attic; 2-window range. A pair of steep gables to the street have shop fronts, that to No.68 extending across the party wall, beneath a jettied first floor, with boxed eaves. Shop fronts have central doorways between shallow bowed windows with glazing bars. First-floor canted oriels have a 10/10-pane sash to No.70 and casement with glazing bars to No.68, and 8/8-pane sashes in flush frames above. INTERIOR: No.70 has a central right-hand winder stair and chamfered lateral ceiling beams. A plan form typical of other mid C17 houses such as in King Street. (Gomme A: Street Index of Buildings of Architectural or Historic Interest: 18).
