GV II
Shop and office with storage over. Late C17 with mid C18, C19
and C20 alterations. Stucco to front and part of rear, coursed
limestone rubble and timber-framing with brick infill to rear
wing; concrete tile roof, hipped to front range; no visible
stacks. Front range has wing and long range of outbuildings to
rear right.
3 storeys and cellar; 4-window range. First floor has three
6/6-pane sashes in moulded architraves and one similar blind
window to centre left; second floor has 3 similar sash windows
and similar blind window to centre left, tops of all second
floor architraves cut off by eaves.
Ground floor has timber shopfront, C19 with C20 alterations,
with 2 plate glass windows and recessed glazed door to right
with iron grille to opening to cellar in stall riser to left,
frieze and moulded cornice over continue over pair of C20
glazed doors in former carriage entrance with chamfered jambs
to left. Shallow plinth; band course over first floor. C19
wrought-iron hanging sign bracket to first floor centre.
Rear elevation has scattered fenestration of sashes and
glazing bar casements; range of outbuildings consists of
single-storey and attic former stable range with 3 gabled half
dormers and ground floor door and window openings with exposed
timber lintels, probably C18, and further single-storey
ranges, probably C19.
INTERIOR of front range has had staircase removed from ground
to first floor, from first to second floors mid C19 stick
baluster staircase; three first floor rooms have chamfered
beams with run-out stops, mid C19 fireplace to front right;
second floor has chamfered beams with run-out stops with
nicks, step-stop to rear, mid C19 fireplace to front right,
mid C19 panelled doors and architraves, oak floorboards.
The Gillman family established in Cirencester since at least
early C19 (see grave slabs in churchyard); living and working
as blacksmiths at No.11 Park Street (qv) in late C19;
ironmongery business carried on from this building for several
generations.
