Bank. c1780 with C19 and C20 additions and alterations.
Limestone ashlar, stucco to left side and to right side of C19
rear ranges; Welsh slate hipped parapeted roof; ashlar
right-end stack with moulded top, similar smaller stack to
right side of rear range.
Main range to Castle Street has substantial 1- and 2-storey
C19/C20 additions to rear. Main range is 3 storey 3 windows.
First floor has 3 Venetian windows with 1/2-pane sashes
flanking 6/6-pane sashes with intersecting traceried heads,
retaining some crown glass; stone mullions in form of
Corinthian pilasters and flanking half-pilasters supporting
entablature with modillion cornice at springing of architrave
around head of centre light, all set within relieving arch
with keystone, keystone to centre in form of king's head.
Ground floor has 3 similar windows with Ionic pilasters,
dentil cornice and lions' head keystones to relieving arches.
Shallow plinth; rustication up to cill band to ground floor
windows; upper mouldings of cornice at springing of heads of
centre lights of windows continued as band across facade; band
course over ground floor forms base for baluster panels below
first floor windows extending to first floor cill band;
cornice at springing of centre lights of windows continued as
band across facade as ground floor; dentil cornice over first
floor with pediment to centre bay; second floor has two
3/3-pane sashes in plain reveals; moulded stone eaves cornice
and blocking course.
To left, C20 single-storey addition with one 8-panel door and
one plate glass sash window in moulded stone architraves
continues ground floor rustication, cornice from ground floor
windows, band courses below first floor.
Right side to Silver Street is 3-storey 2-window range with
centre bay, blind to first and second floors, breaking
forward. First floor has two 6/6-pane sashes in recessed
unmoulded surrounds, similar blind round-headed window to
centre. Second floor has two 3/3-pane sashes in plain reveals
and similar blind window to centre. Ground floor has one
6/6-pane horned sash to right, 6/6-pane sash with intersecting
traceried head to centre, pair of C20 eight-panel doors to
left in moulded stone architrave with dentil cornice over.
Bands and main cornices continued from front.
Right side of C19 rear ranges to Silver Street is 2-storey, 2
low storeys and single-storey with C19/C20 2/2-pane and plate
glass sashes; rustication to ground floor and band courses
below first floor continued to 2-storey range.
INTERIOR of banking hall is C19 with C20 alterations;
plastered beams with panelled soffits supported on square
pilasters with egg-and-dart moulded tops; enriched moulded
cornice to each panel of ceiling; C20 security screen and
other alterations. Fireplace mentioned in Pevsner said to have
been removed during alterations in early 1970's; position in
rear range and C19 Classical decoration of banking hall
suggest C19 rather than early C18 date.
