Constructed as Capital and Counties Bank, now showroom,
workshops and offices. Dated 1873. Coursed squared limestone
with ashlar dressings; clay tile roof with decorative pierced
ridge tiles; stone stacks to left and right ends, to right 3
flues grouped on moulded base with moulded cap, to left base
only remains. One gable to front. Building is in eclectic
Jacobethan style.
2 storeys, attic and cellar; 4-window range. First floor has
three 3-light hollow-chamfered stone mullion and transom
windows with C19 iron casements in lower lights, leaded lights
above, each light with Tudor-arched head, hoodmoulds with
diagonal stops; to left similar 4-light oriel window with
moulded base, brattishing and weathered ashlar roof.
Ground floor has 3 similar 3-light windows with cusped heads
to each light and foliage carved in spandrels; 4 panels with
shields over each window, 4 shields with lettering CHELTENHAM,
STROUD, REDDITCH, STOW-ON-THE-WOLD. Moulded shafts flanking
each window with Gothic finial tops spring from deep moulded
top of plinth which continues as outer moulding of moulded and
enriched stone surround to door to left; pair of studded plank
doors with dogtooth pattern to heads of studs and decorative
strap hinges have overlight with 3 leaded lights with cusped
heads.
Gable to left has one 3-light hollow-chamfered stone mullion
window with leaded lights to left and right; one similar
2-light window in gabled full dormer to right. Deep plinth
with moulded top has offset with vermiculated ashlar below;
moulded string over ground floor; moulded eaves cornice with
carved heads, to far left and right acting as gargoyles
discharging into square-section cast-iron down pipes with
decorative hopper heads; embattled parapet with moulded
coping; crow-stepped gables to left and to dormer, each with
finial. Date 1873 on carved ribbon decoration to gable of
dormer.
Sides and rear of building in similar but simplified style.
Pair of elaborately decorated iron gates attached to left
side.
INTERIOR partially inspected; staircase to rear left entered
from side door is closed string well staircase in softwood
with chamfered stick balusters, trefoil heads to newels and
carved flower pendents; first floor front left has moulded
stone fireplace with Tudor flower decoration, moulded cornice
with similar decoration continues beyond later subdivision of
room to centre left; moulded stone fireplaces with 4-centred
arched openings to rear wing first floor centre and far end;
chamfered stone fireplaces to rear wing second floor centre
and far end; 4-panel doors, moulded timber architraves and
skirtings in stained softwood throughout.
