Midland Bank and attached railings
GV II
Bank. 1915-1916. By Lawson and Thomas Whinney. Portland stone
ashlar; Delabole slate roof, hipped to corner; ashlar left-end
stack with moulded top to Market Place elevation, similar
ridge and right-end stacks to Cricklade Street.
Simple Edwardian Baroque style; corner site with elevations to
Market Place and Cricklade Street, circular turret at corner.
Market Place elevation is 2 storeys and attic, 2-window range.
First floor has two 6/6-pane horned sashes in moulded stone
architraves with moulded stone cills with aprons below; ground
floor has 2 large C20 windows. Attached Doric colonnade on
stone base with panels of serpentine wrought-iron railings has
paired columns to left and right, single column to centre,
frieze and bracketed cornice over.
Rusticated pilaster strips flanking first floor, full
entablature and modillion eaves cornice. Flat-topped dormer
with moulded timber cornice has 2/4 3/6 2/4 triple horned
sash.
Turret to right on corner has 6/6-pane horned curved sash in
plain reveal to first floor with moulded stone cill with apron
below in flat panel surround with recessed Doric
half-pilasters to left and right, frieze and moulded cornice,
raised panel above continued upwards to eaves cornice.
Ground floor has pair of 6-panel hardwood doors in moulded
architrave with bracketed frieze and cornice, keystone in form
of large bracket with additional carved decoration of
cartouches, swags and ribbons. Frieze and bracketed cornice
over ground floor continued from Market Place elevation.
Lead-covered Baroque dome with lead finial at apex.
Right side to Cricklade Street is 6-window range in similar
style with 4-panel door to far right, kneeler below coped
gable to right in form of carved bracket. INTERIOR not
inspected.
