House. Probably late C18, reconstructed by VA Lawson for
himself, late C19/early C20. Limestone ashlar to centre,
coursed squared limestone to wings; roof to centre is lead
flat behind parapet with Welsh slate gabled roof to rear,
Welsh slate roofs to wings; rendered stacks to left and right
of main range on coped gables of wings, 2 reconstituted stone
stacks to left and right of gabled roof to rear centre.
Main range with pedimented central bay breaking forward
slightly is set back from street and flanked by pair of wings
coming forward to edge of pavement.
Main range is 2-storey 5-window; first floor has five C19
3/6-pane horned sashes in plain reveals; ground floor has 4
similar 6/6-pane sashes with stone cills. Ground floor centre
has pedimented Doric porch with half-column respond; 6-panel
door with decorative overlight with 3 octagonal panes. Shallow
ashlar plinth; band course over ground floor; cill band to
first floor; moulded stone cornice with pediment to centre;
blocking course. Former railing bases with segmental tops
extend from porch to each wing.
Wing to left is 2-storey 2-window; two 3/6-pane sashes in
plain reveals to first floor; 2 similar windows below with
stone cills. Door with 6 flush panels and single-pane
overlight in plain reveal to left. Shallow plinth; cill band
to first floor. Right return has single-pane sash to ground
floor.
Wing to right (No.27A) is similar to wing to left without cill
band to first floor but narrow band course over ground floor
to correspond to cill band to left; half-glazed C20 door with
4-pane overlight. Each wing has moulded eaves gutter; moulded
hopper head and rectangular section down-pipe to return to
main range.
INTERIOR not inspected but No.27 noted as having staircase to
left with shaped cheek-pieces, 2 turned balusters to a tread,
possibly C18 rearranged in C19.
