Town house and shop. Early C19 refronting to earlier
timber-frame, possibly late C16 but probably rebuilt after
1641 fire which destroyed No.20 Bridge Street (qv). Roughcast,
brick rear additions; tile roof. L-plan. 2 storeys; 3-window
range. Top cornice. Entrance to right of centre has bracketed
pedimental gable over glazed door; entry to right end. Ground
floor has 3 late C19 shop windows with narrow lean-to roofs
and upper leaded glazing, that to right projecting; similar
3-light 1st-floor windows with leaded glazing. Entry passage
has exposed timber-framing. Rear has date: 1675: scratched in
roughcast and various C19 additions including long workshop
range. INTERIOR: chamfered beams. The home of William Smith,
haberdasher, reputed to have been Shakespeare's godfather.
