House, mid to late C16 with C17 extensions and mid C18 front.
Timber-framed with red Flemish-bond brick front and gabled
roof of clay plain tiles. Two storeys and attics and cellars.
EXTERIOR: 2 gabled dormers behind panelled parapet, part now
reduced. Front has moulded brick modillioned cornice and
raised brick band between storeys. 4-window range of
double-hung sash windows, with original thick glazing bars and
flat rubbed brick arches with projecting rubbed brick
keystones. The central part (2-window range) breaks forward
slightly. The SE recessed part has elaborate doorcase with
6-panel door and panelled reveals. Fluted Roman Doric
pilasters and pediment above frieze with roses and sunflowers
between triglyphs. Early C19 door surround with fluted
architrave and 6-panel door in equivalent recessed part of
facade to NW. General character of facade similar to Nos 36 &
37 (qv). 2-bay timber frame of mid to late C16 with jowled
posts and lodged side purlin roof with arched wind bracing.
Probably originally jettied.
INTERIOR: the first floor is of 2 chambers, that to NW having
double quadrant mouldings to tiebeam and ceiling spine beam
soffits. Wall bracing is long and of serpentine form,
interrupting the studs (probably a very early example of
this). Original door opening between chambers with plain
lintel head and flat chamfers to northern room. Contemporary
brick-lined cellar with flight of steps to yard. This has twin
chamfered spine beams and flat section joists with soffit
tenons and diminished haunches. The C16 works do not appear as
conventional house plan of period.
Substantial C17 stack against rear wall apparently related to
2-storey C17 rear extension. Stack has first-floor stone
fireplace with cambered arch of 2 pieces. Rectangular carved
panels with strapwork, grotesques and foliage. Jambs are
moulded with 'vase' stops. Over fireplace, a panel of grey
painted bands.
The C17 rear extension has jowled posts and remains of
exceptionally long frieze windows with moulded mullions with
glazing rebates (mostly now reused elsewhere). Ground floor
was probably kitchen with fireplace in base of this
contemporary stack. To the SE is a lean-to, formerly with
similar mullions and probably contemporary. Similar lean-to to
NW is later.
Rear elevation is now rendered and roof of clay plain tiles is
gabled to rear. Ground floor rooms have good quality mid C18
panelling including panelled partition to entrance passage.
Each ground floor room has fireplace with evidence of short
pilasters above mantel shelves. Southern room has moulded
overmantel frame in situ. To rear of entrance passage is a
semicircular-arched opening with moulded imposts and panelled
pilasters. A C17 painted overmantel panel of unidentified
mansion, once in situ is now in storage. Upper landing has
length of C18 staircase balustrading with moulded handrail and
turned balusters. part of a bobbin reel overdoor ventilator
screen survives on ground floor.
