GV II
Public house, probably former house. Early to mid C17. Timber-framed and rendered with double range of clay plain tiled roofs (concrete plain tiles on inner slopes). 2 storeys with low attic storey and cellars and jettied on NE and SE sides. Short single-storey extension on SW side. EXTERIOR: the southernmost gable has one double-hung sash window with small panes and plain bargeboards. The other gable has a 2-light casement with moulded surround and cross-glazing pattern. The first floor of NE elevation has 3 flush double-hung sash windows with small panes. The equivalent SE elevation has 2 similar windows, one each side of a narrower double-hung sash. Ground floor has C19 public house frontage with windows and doors between pilasters and substantial imitation jetty brackets. Small risers are panelled in wood. Brick, gabled extension with rendered front with double-hung sash window with 2 vertical glazing bars and small gabled dormer. Large stack on SW flank. INTERIOR: remarkable timber frame of two-and-a-half-storey type and 'A' frame roof. Paired gables, to front and rear have reversed assembly at eaves (did they project?) and a wide 'stack bay' crosses centre of plan. Here, outward facing, jowled posts support ends of valley plates. Ground- and first-floor framing is chamfered with lamb's tongue stops and exceptionally late examples of halved and bridled scarf joints in top plates. Corner supported on dragon beam. First-floor rooms have series of contemporary plaster ceilings with plastered beam soffits with rose, fleur-de-lys leaves and circular pendants. Also exposed spine beams in extension.
