TM2632NW KING'S QUAY STREET 609-1/2/91 (South West side) Walled enclosure N of Church of St Nicholas, incorporating churchyard wall
GV II
Rectangular walled enclosure, C19 with earlier brickwork, possible C17 and C18. Four high red brick walls now enclose a yard with two panelled asbestos-roofed sheds. The SW wall is part early C19 of Flemish bond with square stone inscribed 'Churchyard boundary 1814'. To the northern end is a raised part with diapering of darker headers. The SE wall, also of Flemish bond has short length with moulded brick coping and one flat buttress. The NE wall now forms the lower part of a shed. The NW and SE walls were rebuilt in the C20.
SUMMARY OF IMPORTANCE The walled red brick enclosure at King's Quay Street comprises walls of C19 and possibly C17 and C18. Although there has been some rebuilding in the C20, the walled enclosure retains both historic fabric and strong group value with other listed buildings in the vicinity including Church of St Nicholas to the south, listed at Grade II*.
