Hotel and restaurant. Mid C19. Brick covered in Roman cement
with roof of concrete pantiles, gabled to SW, hipped on NE and
returning to gable at SE end. 3 storeys with belvedere and
square plan form. Belvedere of unequal octagon plan with
concrete pantile roof rising to iron finial. Consoles and
part-consoles on exposed front corners.
EXTERIOR: NW front face has 2 coupled double-hung sash windows
with moulded semicircular heads and circle motif above.
North-east and SW flanks have one similar window. Modillioned
cornice and main front of 3 wide bays with rusticated banded
pilasters. Second floor has C20 aluminium windows with raised
surrounds and moulded band at floor level. First floor has, on
each outer bay, paired C20 aluminium French window with linked
upcurving 'Baroque' entablatures.
Central bay has central window with segmental moulded arch and
keystone and 'Pier Hotel' in sans serif letters. Full width
balcony with elegant cast-iron handrail. Ground floor has
central arched entrance and unaltered right-hand bay has
tripartite subdivision of pilasters with semicircular windows
with 3 linked windows in central part.
The left bay has C20 simplification with coupled arch-headed
windows in centre. At time of survey projecting plastic
canopies either side of entrance. The return flank to NE is of
ashlared render with 4 double-hung sash windows on first and
second floor, corner banded strip pilasters and double
arch-headed windows on ground floor with small painted timber
pilasters.
