Chapel of ease. 1865 by Edward Adams at the instigation of John Robinson
M.P. Polychromatic brickwork with occasional sandstone dressings;
slate roofs with verge parapets. North Italian Romanesque style.
West porch and baptistry, nave, aisles to north and south and apse.
Nave exposed only to west with a gable capped by pinnacles to sides
and bellcote to apex, corbelled brick "machicolation" to verge; two
light Romanesque window to slight central break over gabled baptistry
of single storey with flanking entrance porches gabled to north and
south. Aisles: aisle gables flank nave and of only marginally less
height; corbelled eaves; four bays defined as inset panels each with
two, two-light Romanesque windows, east and west ends have similar
3-light windows and quatrefoil light to apices. Apse of seven bays,
octagonally ended; corbelled eaves; continuous band of Romanesque
fenestration set high, under eaves with 3 lights to each bay. Interior:
four-bay arcade in brick with stencilled Byzantine pattern on capitals;
plastered walls; thin, scissor-braced nave roof; chancel and baptistry
arches on twin attached brick shafts. B.O.E. p. 96.
