7.11.66 Church of St. Peter

II*

Parish church. Late C15 west tower, the rest rebuilt 1845. Ashlar walls and lead covered roofs of low pitch with stone coped verges. West tower, 3-bay nave with aisles, 2-bay chancel. West tower: 3 stages marked by offsets, with moulded plinth, diagonal buttresses dying into the belfry stage, and crenellated parapet with hollow-chamfered string and gargoyles at the corners. 2-centred west doorway of 2 chamfered orders with returned hood-mould. 3-light window above with hollow-chamfered surround, depressed 4-centred arch and returned hood mould. Rectangular loop in each face of the second stage. Belfry openings of 2 trefoil-headed lights beneath a 2-centred drop arch with supermullions over the lights containing a central quatrefoil. Nave and aisles: 3-light aisle windows with panelled tracery beneath 2-centred arches. Square-headed clerestory windows of 2 trefoil-headed lights with sunken spandrels. Diagonal buttresses at the corners, plain aisle parapets with moulded coping, crenellated nave parapet. 2-centred south entrance with 2 orders of ogee mouldings. Chancel: 2-centred windows with Y-tracery; the east window has cusped intersecting tracery. Buttresses at the bay divisions and diagonal buttresses at the corners. Interior: 3-bay nave arcades of double chamfered pointed arches on octagonal columns with moulded capitals. 2-centred tower arch. Tall chancel arch on semi-octagonal columns with moulded capitals and hollow chamfered hood mould terminating in heads. Low pitched king-post roof over nave with bracketed tie beams, the brackets springing from moulded stone corbels; arch-braced collar roof over chancel. Fixtures and fittings: Small west gallery within the tower, the lower part of the tower arch having been screened off to form a vestry. Octagonal font with the panelled sides depicting alternately, angels and symbols of the Evangelists. Full set of C19 box pews. Stalls of same period with poppy heads. C19 hexagonal pulpit with panel tracery to the sides. B.O.E. pp. 731 - 2.
