GODALMING BRIDGE STREET SU 9744 SW (south-east side) 11/22 No 20 (Riverside 12.2.1979 Chambers) and attached screen walls GV II

House, now solicitors' office and attached screen walls. Possibly late C17, and early C18, of 3 builds; C20 alterations. Painted brick and timber frame with brick infill; plain tile roofs. 2-storey, 2-bay block with gabled bay to rear and narrower timber-framed wing, 2 rooms deep, to rear again. Side entry. Road front: on each floor, two 16-pane sashes with glazing bars in wooden archi- traves; parapet behind which rises hipped roof with tall external end stacks (right one with offset), and further back taller gabled roof with cross-ridge stack. Screen walls on either side have round arches, the left one with vermi- culated keystone. Left return: bay to rear of main block is of differently- coursed brickwork, both sections having stepped dentilled eaves. Timber-framed wing on left has outshut to rear and the poor quality framing comprises posts, mid-rail, wall-plate and spindly studs; roof half-hipped on left and with C20 skylights. Main entrance on right return. Interior: front left room has C18 fireplace, the wooden architrave having fluted pilasters, frieze with end paterae and moulded shelf; C18 stone fireplace surround in bay to rear has xpilasters, moulded cornice on blocks and mantleshelf.
