House. Remodelled c1740 but incorporating some earlier fabric. Coursed rubble with rusticated ashlar quoins and ashlar dressings; hipped slate roof; ashlar integral ridge stacks and lateral external stack. 3 storeys; 2:1:2 windows; slightly projecting central bay with rusticated ashlar quoins and ground storey; glazing bar sashes in raised surrounds, central first floor window has a triangular pediment, central second floor window, a raised keystone, panelled surround and bracketed sill; central double leaved panelled door flanked by Doric pilasters, with oblong overlight and moulded hood cornice; moulded eaves course; iron bracketed gutter. Rear Elevation: 3 storeys; projecting wing to left with hipped roof; main range to right. Wing has 2 windows, glazing bar sashes in raised surrounds, those to ground floor have small horns; stack to left hand side. Main range: Tall round-headed stair-window to left with raised keystone; second floor 2-light window to left with central plain mullion, containing glazing bar sashes with horns; tall central basket arched recess with grotesque mask to keystone, containing a 2-light window with central plain mullion and glazing bar sashes; right of arch a blocked window to both first and second floors; extension projecting from right hand corner of main range with catslide roof sloping to right, and integral end stack. Interior: Entrance Hall has a carved limestone fireplace with baroque scrolled decoration above mantlepiece; wide open arch on console brackets between the entrance hall and the early C18 open well staircase which has wall panelling, turned balusters and shaped tread ends, the hand rail terminates in a wreath. The Study, formerly the parlour incorporates a stone fireplace with projecting keystone interrupting a double ogee arched head, similar fireplaces are found in 2 of the bedrooms; Cl7 floor to ceiling oak panelling probably taken from the old house; segmental headed alcove fitted with shelves. The Drawing Room: Formerly 2 rooms, both with early C18 bolection panelling. Castern Hall was probably rebuilt for Nicholas Hurt,(1710-1767);possible architects are the Smiths of Warwick or the local master mason Richard Trubshawe of Haywood in Staffordshire.
